Lost your EIN letter?

How to get a replacement from the IRS, or find your EIN number fast.

The IRS doesn't reissue your original EIN letter (the CP 575), but it will send a replacement called Letter 147C, "EIN Previously Assigned." Banks, payroll providers, and partners accept either one as proof of your EIN.

Option 1: Download it from your IRS Business Tax Account

If your business is eligible for an IRS Business Tax Account, sign in and look under Tax Records for a digital CP 575. The IRS says it can be used in place of the original CP 575 and the 147C letter. IRS Business Tax Account

Option 2: Call the IRS for a 147C letter

  1. Call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933, Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time (Alaska and Hawaii follow Pacific time).
  2. Have your business's legal name, address, and EIN (if you know it) ready.
  3. The IRS verifies your identity and only gives EIN details to someone authorized for the business, such as an owner, officer, or authorized representative.
  4. Ask for Letter 147C, EIN Previously Assigned, and ask how they can send it to you.

Just need the number?

The IRS suggests checking the notice it sent when you applied, the bank that holds your business account, state or local agencies where you applied for a license, and past business tax returns. Details: IRS EIN page.
