Certificate of Good Standing by State
What every state calls it, where to order it, the fee, and how fast you get it. Updated October 2026.
A certificate of good standing is a document from your state that shows your business is registered and up to date. Banks, payroll providers, insurers, and partners often ask for one to confirm your business is active. Most states let you order it online in a few minutes, often for $5 to $25.
Before you order
- Order it from the state where your business was formed. If you're registered in other states too, they issue their own versions.
- States call it different things: Certificate of Good Standing, Existence, Status, and more. They prove the same thing.
- Can't get one? The most common reason is an overdue annual report or fee. File that first, then order.
- Many states need a free account on their business portal to order.
- Watch for look-alike mailers. Private companies send official-looking letters offering certificates for $50 to $90. Order directly from your state.
