FAQ: Verifying Your Business Name & Tax ID for Payment Account Setup

Helpful hints and guidance on how to connect a business payment account

Q1: Why am I being asked for my EIN and business name?

Stripe is legally required to verify who’s receiving funds. As part of this process, they confirm your business’s legal name and Tax ID (EIN) with the IRS.

Q2: What happens if my information doesn’t match IRS records?

If the IRS lookup finds your EIN but the business name doesn’t match exactly, Stripe will flag it as an error. Your account remains unverified (and payouts are on hold) until the names align.

Q3: How should I enter my business name on Stripe?

Enter exactly what appears in official IRS records. This includes:

  • Hyphens (–)

  • Accented characters (é, ñ, etc.)

  • Commas and periods (, .)

  • Spaces (no extra or missing spaces)

Any deviation—no matter how small—will trigger a mismatch.

Q4: How can I correct a name mismatch?

  1. Check your IRS documentation (e.g. EIN confirmation letter).

  2. Copy the business name exactly as shown, character-for-character.

  3. Update your Stripe account with the corrected name.

Once the entry matches, your account will be enabled and payouts can resume.
