Background Checks and Credentials

Review candidate profiles on the event dashboard—including background checks and credentials—to confidently select qualified athletic trainers and officials for your event.

Before submitting interest in an event stipend opportunity, Athletic Trainers and Officials must create a registered user profile with Tourney Direct. This profile gathers essential details about their experience, background checks, and credentials.

Once submitted, this information appears on the Event Management portal dashboard for review by you, your team, a Head Trainer, or an Assignor when confirming staff for your event.

Athletic Trainers

Profile information we collect includes:

  • Years of Experience: Indicates the time spent in practice, which generally leads to greater knowledge, skills, and competency in assessing injuries, developing treatment plans, managing athlete health, and handling complex situations—often resulting in more advanced or higher-responsibility roles in the field.
  • NATA Certified: If an athletic trainer is "NATA certified," it means they have met the educational and competency standards set by the National Athletic Trainers' Association and passed the required certification exam, confirming they are a qualified professional.
  • CPR/AED Certified: They have completed training on performing CPR for adults, children, and infants, and on using an AED to treat cardiac arrest.
  • Active Background Check Available: If an athletic trainer has a background check, it means a third party has reviewed their criminal history—looking for offenses like sexual crimes, violence, or drug-related issues—to ensure they are safe to work with athletes, especially minors.

Officials

Profile information we collect includes:

  • Years of Experience: Years of experience as an official or referee suggests they have spent considerable time on the field, gaining practical knowledge of the rules, improving their decision-making skills, and learning how to handle complex or high-pressure game situations effectively.
  • Certified as an Official: When an official or referee is "certified," it means they have completed the required training and passed evaluations to show they understand and can enforce the sport's rules. This certification proves they are qualified to officiate games at a recognized level.
  • Active Background Check Available: If an official has a background check, it means a third party has reviewed their criminal history—looking for offenses like sexual crimes, violence, or drug-related issues—to ensure they are safe to work with athletes, especially minors.

If you need additional verification, you may request proof such as a background check report or a letter from a previous employer confirming that a background check was completed. Ultimately, verifying the status and credentials of potential staff is your responsibility. You may also wish to refer to our comprehensive safety guidelines for best practices on protecting athletes.
